How We Transformed a Parking Lot into Provo’s Most Unique Event Venue and Museum

Discover how a steel building, a family legacy, and a lot of creative grit turned an RV lot into Provo’s most unique wedding venue and museum.

Key Takeaways

  • This venue took 4 years of creative effort and city negotiations to bring to life.

  • The location now features a one-of-a-kind museum and retro wedding/event space.

  • Bathrooms are built inside semi-trailers and use bus lifts for ADA-compliant access.

  • The project was inspired by a family legacy of collecting vintage gas signs, antique cars, and Americana memorabilia.

  • Today, the Sparks Museum and Event Center is one of the most unique places to host events in Provo.

The Origin Story

In the beginning...

In the winter of 2019, a spark of inspiration ignited a years-long journey. The lot in Provo, once a quiet corner for long-term RV parking, was land we already owned. While most would see only a flat, dusty property, I saw the beginnings of something remarkable.

Having acquired a large steel building, my mind immediately went to the idea of a museum—a home for my father Sparky’s cherished collection of Petroliana: vintage gas pumps, antique cars, and rare porcelain gas signs that dated back generations.

This wasn't just a family project. It was a mission. My father’s collection told a story—one of American ingenuity, roadside culture, and nostalgia—and it needed a proper stage.

Hitting Roadblocks

The city said no. No sewer access. No building. No bathrooms. And no clear solution in sight.

But if you know me—or my father—you know we don't accept "no" without a fight. I met with Provo City planners, engineers, inspectors, and more. It was a whirlwind of red tape, bureaucracy, and flat-out rejection. Still, every obstacle was just another puzzle to solve.

After more than a year, persistence paid off. With the right plan, some creative civil engineering, and a lot of negotiation, we got the green light. A compromise was reached: we’d build raised structures, including bathrooms high off the ground, with our own lift station to connect to city sewers—located over a mile away.

Creative Construction Choices

Creativity Won

Raising the ground, installing electricity and water, and building elevated bathrooms inside old semi-trailers—none of this was standard. But that’s what makes the Sparks Museum and Event Center unforgettable.

To comply with ADA standards, we installed bus lifts for accessibility. These retrofitted features don’t just meet code—they add character. Each element reflects our passion for doing things differently. Rather than hiding our limitations, we leaned into them and used them to create something iconic.

Designing a Venue with Soul

The building with soul.

Soul and History.

The building was never intended to be just a museum or just an event center. It had to be both. From custom lighting over vintage cars to wall-mounted gas station signs that double as photo backdrops, every detail was intentional.

Our space caters to wedding parties, corporate events, reunions, and photographers who are searching for something a little outside the norm. We bring guests into a world of chrome, color, and craftsmanship.

Why It’s Worth Visiting

What makes this venue so unique isn’t just the aesthetics—it’s the heart behind it. You’re walking through history curated by a father and daughter. Every piece has a backstory, a purpose, a memory.

And because the space is unlike anything else in Utah County, it’s also ideal for events that want to stand out. We’re not your typical barn or ballroom. We’re neon lights, restored classics, and modern hospitality with a nostalgic twist.

Final Thoughts from Tiffany

Four years later, we’ve built more than a building—we’ve built a legacy. The Sparks Museum and Event Center is a testament to vision, resilience, and the power of saying “Why not?” instead of “We can’t.”

So if you’re planning a wedding, photo shoot, or private event and want something truly unique, I invite you to come see what we’ve built.

Celebrating Local Partnerships & Events

Mustang Alley, Sparks Museum and Event Center

Mustang Alley

Since opening, we’ve been honored to work with local Utah County vendors and creatives. We've hosted:

  • The Northern Utah Mustang Owners Association for vintage car meetups and summer cruises

  • Weekly Western Swing with Swingin’ Dance Co.

  • Collaborated with local food trucks

  • Welcomed local artists and photographers for styled shoots and retro-themed art

  • Partnered with Provo-based florists and event planners

  • Celebrated community events

We’re proud to support Provo’s thriving creative and entrepreneurial community.

A Big Thanks to Provo City

We couldn't have done this without the support, guidance, and patience of Provo City. From the planning department to the civil engineering team, we worked with countless city employees who took the time to understand our vision—and eventually, helped us make it real.

While the early stages brought challenges, the city was never against us. They just needed the right plan. Once that was in place, they became a partner in progress. It’s because of Provo City’s collaborative spirit that this venue now stands as one of the most unique event spaces in Utah.

We're especially grateful for their flexibility in finding a creative solution for sewer access and for approving our unconventional—but code-compliant—bathroom design.

Go Vintage for Your Corporate Christmas Party

Your company’s Christmas party this year and want something different from the usual

A vintage Christmas party stands out. Instead of the same old tinsel and buffet, imagine your guests walking into a space filled with warm lights, shiny chrome, and 1950s, 60s, or 70s holiday tunes playing in the background.

Here are a few ideas to bring your Provo corporate holiday party to life:

  • Themed Décor: Think mid-century modern, classic diner settings, or a “Route 66 Christmas.” The museum’s collection of neon signs and Americana adds to the mood.

  • Vintage-Inspired Dress Code: Encourage your team to wear holiday sweaters from the '50s or '60s or even dress up like characters from White Christmas or A Christmas Story.

  • Throwback Activities: Set up a photo booth with vintage props, play retro party games, or even screen a black-and-white holiday film.

  • Unique Atmosphere: The museum space blends creativity and history, making it easy to make your event more memorable.

5 Subtle Ways to Make a Corporate Event More Memorable

5 Subtle Ways to Make a Corporate Event More Memorable

Creating an unforgettable corporate event doesn’t always mean going bigger. Often, the difference between ordinary and exceptional is in the details, the little choices that shape how guests feel and what they remember. Whether you're organizing a leadership retreat, a product launch, or a year-end celebration, here are a few thoughtful upgrades that can take your next event from routine to remarkable.

1. Let the Space Tell a Story

Great venues aren’t just backdrops, they’re part of the narrative. Consider how your environment can reflect your company’s mission, values, or innovation. Hosting corporate events in Provo at a venue surrounded by classic Americana or one-of-a-kind artifacts can naturally spark conversations and deepen connections.

Corporate Memories start with the first "Wow!"

Let the space tell a story, introdcue some “Wow1”

2. Elevate the Experience with Sensory Details

The most unforgettable corporate events engage all the senses. From ambient lighting to curated music playlists to signature scents, subtle sensory cues can leave a lasting impact. Think about incorporating these elements strategically without overwhelming the purpose of your gathering.

3. Break the Mold with Interactive Elements

Skip the traditional PowerPoint marathon. Try rotating breakout stations, themed trivia tied to your brand, or even a “throwback” lounge where guests can unplug and connect. The right setting makes this easier—especially one that naturally encourages exploration and mingling.

What? Would you rather be watching a PowerPoint?

4. Incorporate Local Flavor

Showcase your location. Partner with local food vendors, artists, or musicians to give your guests a taste of the region. A place like Provo offers a blend of mountain views, cultural heritage, and creativity—all elements that can inspire your team or clients.

5. Personalize the Takeaways

Swag is nice. Thoughtful mementos are better. Capture moments with a branded photo booth in front of a visually iconic backdrop. Offer personalized items guests will actually use. Small touches like these can make an event more memorable without inflating your budget.

Make the setting personal to the people or individuals.

Set the table to meet the mood. Every little thing makes a statement of "We see you!”

Choose the Right Corporate Event Venue

How to Choose the Right Corporate Event Venue In provo

All the Goods On Sparks Museum and Event Center

And Why Sparks Museum Might Be the One for You

Planning a corporate event involves more than just picking a date. One of the most important choices you'll make is the venue. The space you choose sets the tone for your entire event; it can either elevate the experience or leave people underwhelmed.

Here’s what to look for in a great corporate venue , and why Sparks Museum and Event Center stands out in all the right ways.

1. Location and Accessibility

Sparks is located at the end of Provo Center Street, making it an easy meeting spot for guests coming from all over Utah County and beyond. Parking is simple, and easy directions for anyone staying in nearby hotels. For corporate teams bringing clients in from out of town, Provo’s close proximity to I-15 and regional airports (Provo Airport) makes the location even more convenient.

2. Space and Capacity

Whether you're hosting a product launch, networking mixer, team training, or awards banquet, Sparks offers flexible indoor and outdoor spaces that can fit your vision. With its wide open floor plans, customizable table setups, and even access to outdoor displays (including historic signage and vintage vehicles), you’ll have more than enough space for mingling, breakouts, and presentations.

3. Technology and AV Support

While Sparks is rooted in history, it’s equipped for the modern world. We provide high-speed internet, projector options, microphone and speaker access, and enough power outlets to keep everyone’s devices running. If you’re planning a hybrid or tech-heavy event, we’ll help you get it set up and tested before guests even arrive.

4. Amenities That Matter

Comfort goes a long way during full-day events. At Sparks, you’ll have access to clean restrooms, food prep areas, and catering-friendly spaces (bring your own vendor or ask for our preferred list). Our team is available to assist with setup and logistics so you can focus on hosting, not troubleshooting.

If your guests are lucky, they might even get to peek at a few museum displays — a fun and unexpected perk of hosting in such a unique venue.

5. Ambiance and Atmosphere

Let’s face it, most corporate events blend together. Sparks doesn’t. The museum space is filled with character, thanks to a collection of Americana, antique gas pumps, and vintage signs that make the atmosphere feel truly memorable. The mix of history and modern utility creates a vibe that’s both professional and interesting, perfect for events that need to be a little more engaging than the usual conference room.

6. Flexibility and Customer Support

We get it, no two events are the same. That’s why we’re flexible on layout, timing, vendor choices, and décor. If you have a vision, we’ll do our best to make it work. And we’re responsive. Whether you're calling with a quick question or needing hands-on support during setup, our team is here to help make your event run smoothly.

Your Event, With a Little Extra Spark

Sparks Museum and Event Center offers something different from location to lighting, technology to texture. It’s not just a place to gather, it’s a place that brings people together in style.

What is provo famous for?

Discover What Makes Provo and Utah Valley Truly Famous

When you think of Utah, your mind might jump to red rock arches or Salt Lake City’s skyline—but tucked against the Wasatch Front is one of the state’s most underrated gems: Provo and the surrounding Utah Valley. As someone who's explored nearly every corner of this area, I can confidently say it's packed with unforgettable experiences, year-round adventure, and a strong sense of community. Here's what makes Provo and Utah Valley famous—and worth every visit.

1. Sundance Mountain Resort

Mount Timpanogos standing behind sundance ski resort in Utah Valley. A perfect location for a couple to get wed or engaged or have a date.

Sundance Ski Resort right in the heart of Utah Valley

Nestled up Provo Canyon, Sundance is more than a ski resort—it's a year-round escape. Founded by Robert Redford, it blends art, nature, and adventure seamlessly. Falling for Utah Valley: My Favorite Outdoor Dates and Scenic Spots

Picnic is a perfect date in Utah Valley up Provo Canyon

Provo Canyon Picnic is the perfect date

If you know me, you know I’ll take a mountain trail or a canyon picnic over a fancy dinner any day. There’s something about being outside in Utah Valley — especially in the spring — that resets my soul and reminds me why I love where I live. Whether you’re planning a romantic date or just want to make memories with someone special, I’ve got a list of outdoor spots that are totally worth your time.

Here are my favorite ways to explore the beauty of Utah Valley together.

🌿 Bridal Veil Falls

Let’s start with a classic. Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon is one of those places that never gets old. It’s a 600-foot waterfall that you can drive right up to, but I recommend parking nearby and taking a walk along the paved Provo River Trail to get the best view. Bring a picnic blanket and sit by the river — it’s peaceful, romantic, and totally Instagram-worthy. Thinking of getting engaged? This is a perfect place, with a backdrop of Bridal Veil Falls how can you go wrong with the photos that you will have when you pop the quesiton. Ok maybe your not there yet, it still makes for an unforgettable date.

The perfect engagement photo is at Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Utah

🥾 Y Mountain Hike

This one’s for couples who like a little challenge. The hike to the Y is short but steep — your legs will feel it — and the views from the top are worth every step. Looking out over the valley at sunset is one of my favorite date moments I’ve ever had. Just bring water and good shoes, and you’re good to go. Plus you will always have that memory when you see the big Y on the mountain.

🌸 Walk the Grounds at the Provo City Center Temple

Provo Ut Temple the perfect place for something to do in Utah Valley as a couple.

Provo, Utah Temple

Even if you're not there for religious reasons, the grounds around the temple are beautifully landscaped and full of flowers this time of year. It’s a peaceful place to take a stroll, especially in the evening when the lights come on. Grab ice cream from Rockwell or a cookie from Chip nearby and make it a relaxed little date night.

🚲 Bike the Provo River Parkway

This trail runs all the way from Utah Lake up through Provo Canyon. Rent bikes (or bring your own) and cruise through shaded paths, over little bridges, and past parks and picnic spots. You’ll pass Bridal Veil Falls along the way, and it’s easy to go as short or long as you want.

🌄 Watch the Sunset from Squaw Peak Overlook

Yes, it’s a drive — but it’s a good one. The road up to Squaw Peak is windy and scenic, and once you reach the overlook, the views over the entire valley are breathtaking. Bring a blanket and watch the sun dip behind Utah Lake. It’s quiet, romantic, and totally free.

🛶 Paddleboarding at Utah Lake

Paddel board as a couple in Utah Valley at Utah Lake State Park

Couples paddel board in Utah Valley at Utah Lake State Park

On a calm day, the water at Utah Lake can be glassy and still — perfect for a couple of paddleboards or even a tandem kayak. It’s a fun way to get outside and try something new together. I recommend launching from the Lindon Marina or Utah Lake State Park.

🌼 Spring Strolls at the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum Arboretum

BYU’s campus is full of surprises, and one of my favorites is the little-known arboretum by the Life Science Museum. It’s a quiet place with trees, flowers, and walking paths — perfect for holding hands and catching up.

🎶 Outdoor Concerts and Events

Keep an eye out for free concerts at parks and amphitheaters. Provo does a great job of bringing music into the open air. Whether it’s at the Riverwoods, the Rooftop Concert Series downtown, or an impromptu performance in the park, it’s always more fun under the stars.

🍓 Visit a U-Pick Farm or Local Orchard

When May rolls into June, local farms start opening their gates for strawberry and cherry picking. Rowley’s Red Barn and McCoard’s Gardens are great places to start. It’s playful, a little nostalgic, and yes — a great excuse to feed each other fresh fruit.

💫 Stargazing in Hobble Creek Canyon

Couples star gazing in Utah Valley

Sometimes the best dates are the simplest. Drive up Hobble Creek Canyon, find a pull-off, and lay out a couple of camp chairs or a blanket. Away from the city lights, the stars are crystal clear. Bring hot chocolate and stay awhile.

Fall in Love with Utah Valley (All Over Again) I do it everyday:)
Weather you are on a first date or you've been together for years, there’s something powerful about sharing these outdoor moments. Utah Valley has a way of grounding you, opening you up, and reminding you that the best things in life are often the simplest. So many things to do in Utah Valley.
